Middlesex County is approximately 60 miles east of Richmond, the state capital; 74 miles north of the Port of Hampton Roads; and 125 miles southeast of Washington, D.C., the nation’s capital.This county was inhabited by the Native American Tribe known as the Powhatan Confederacy who had a village on the river now known as Urbanna. English Settlement of the area began in 1640 then was officially formed from Lancaster County in 1669.
